Black Marlin - Heavy Tackle

This is the big one! the Great Barrier Reef is the home of the Giant Black Marlin. Utopia charters run two and multiple day, live aboard trips to the Myrmidon Reef.  Longer charters are available, fishing the shelf all the way through to the ribbon reefs between Lizard Island and Cairns, where Black Marlin can grow up to 1500 pounds and fish over 1000 pounds are caught every year.

Between September and December is the best time to catch your fish of a lifetime. Utopia has live aboard trips on the Barrier Reef to maximise your fishing time when targeting the Giant Black Marlin.

Tom and Utopia Charters strictly adhere to the tagging and release of all billfish but on very rear occasions a record fish or monumental capture presents itself.  This is one such case where the fish died at the side of the boat.

42 years after the first Black Marlin over 1000 lbs was officially weighed in at Cairns (though many went close) the first fish to ever break the magic mark South of Cairns was caught at Myrmidon Reef on 29-9-2007 weighing in at 1109.9 lbs 23 hours after capture.  The vessel was "Rose Red" a Riviera 39, formerly Tom's previous "Utopia" of nine years which Tom Hatrick was skippering for the new owner, angler and friend Mark Hislop.
